Privacy policy

This policy explains what Animal Brawl (animalbrawl.com, “we”) collects when you use the site, why, and the choices you have. Questions or requests: hello@animalbrawl.com.

What we collect

• Account details: your username, email address and password. We store passwords only as a salted hash, never in readable form.
• What you post and do: votes, arguments, replies, sources you link, matchups you start, animals you suggest, reports and up/down votes. Arguments, replies, usernames and matchups you start are public. Your email and your individual votes are not shown to other people.
• Email settings: which emails you want from us, and when we last sent you a digest.
• Technical data: your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, which our hosting provider processes to deliver and protect the site (for example, to block attacks).
• Usage statistics: we use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits and page views. It doesn't use cookies or build a profile of you.

Why we use it

• To run your account, show your arguments and count your votes.
• To confirm your email, reset your password, and send the notification emails you choose (replies, a daily digest).
• To prevent spam, fake accounts and abuse, and to enforce the house rules.
• To understand which parts of the site people use, so we can improve it.
• To show ads that pay for the site (see below).

We don't sell your personal information.

Cookies and similar storage

• Sign-in cookie (ab_session): keeps you signed in. It's required for accounts to work and lasts up to 30 days.
• Browser storage: an argument you're still typing is kept in your browser so a reload doesn't lose it. It never leaves your device.
• Advertising cookies: set by Google and other ad vendors when ads are shown (see below).

Advertising

We use Google AdSense to show ads. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.

You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings. Alternatively, you can opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info. Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its ads at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

Ad vendors serving ads on this site: Google (Google AdSense). If we add other ad networks, we will list them here with links to their opt-out pages.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent before personalized ads and advertising cookies are used, and can change that choice at any time.

Who we share data with

We share data only with service providers that run the site for us, and only what they need:

• Cloudflare: hosting, database, file storage, security, analytics and sending email.
• Google: advertising, as described above.

We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect people from harm or the site from abuse.

How long we keep it

• Account data: until you delete your account.
• Email confirmation links expire after 48 hours, password reset links after 1 hour.
• Notification records: until the email about them is sent.
• Removed arguments may be kept for a short time for moderation and abuse investigations.

Your choices and rights

• Change your email, password and which emails you get in your account settings. Every email we send has an unsubscribe link.
• To get a copy of your data, correct it, or delete your account and its data, email hello@animalbrawl.com from the address on your account. We'll respond within 30 days.
• Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, UK or California), you may have further rights, such as to object to processing or to complain to your data protection authority. We'll honor them on request.

Children

Animal Brawl is for people 13 and older. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has made an account, email hello@animalbrawl.com and we'll delete it.

Security

We protect data with encrypted connections, hashed passwords and access limited to the people who run the site. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a password you don't use elsewhere.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. For significant changes, we'll tell signed-in users on the site or by email.
